We often talk with clients about using their wealth with purpose—and few strategies align with that mindset more than charitable planning. For many families we work with, generosity is already part of their financial life. When approached strategically, giving can do more than support meaningful causes—it can also strengthen your overall financial plan. Our aim is to help families move from simply having a giving direction to developing an intentional giving strategy—one that aligns with their values, maximizes impact, and integrates seamlessly into their overall financial plan.
Let’s cut through the noise around charitable strategies and focus on what really matters.
Begin with Purpose
For many of our clients, giving is not about tax benefits—it’s about purpose. Whether supporting community organizations, faith-based initiatives, or honoring a generational legacy, philanthropy is a meaningful extension of their values.
True charitable planning begins with clarity of purpose. Once that intent is defined, we shift focus to structure—because thoughtful strategy doesn’t just facilitate giving; it amplifies it. Done well, it aligns generosity with long-term financial stewardship and multi-generational impact.
Strategy Over Simplicity: The Big Four
Charitable planning isn’t about complexity for complexity sake—it’s about precision. While we consider a number of charitable strategies, we see four primary strategies that consistently deliver impact while aligning with each client’s broader financial goals:
Four Potential Giving Strategies
Effective charitable planning is about aligning the right strategies with your intent. Below are four approaches we commonly use to help clients give with greater impact—while maximizing efficiency and control.
- Stop Donating Cash?
While every family’s situation is unique, donating cash is often one of the least tax-efficient ways to give. In contrast, contributing appreciated stock can be among the most effective strategies—allowing donors to potentially avoiding capital gains tax, receive a larger charitable deduction, and increase the amount the organization receives. Donors then repurchase shares of stock with the cash they still have – effectively resetting their cost basis and eliminating taxable gains.
- Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)
DAFs provide flexibility and control—especially in high-income years. They allow for a single-year deduction and ongoing charitable distributions. For many clients, pairing a DAF contribution with a Roth conversion can meaningfully offset tax liability and shift more dollars toward charitable outcomes rather than the IRS.
- Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
For clients age 70½ or older, QCDs enable direct IRA gifts to qualified charities. These distributions satisfy required minimum distributions (RMDs) without increasing taxable income—a particularly elegant solution for those seeking efficiency in retirement income planning.
- Bunching Strategies
By consolidating multiple years of charitable giving into one tax year, clients can exceed the standard deduction threshold and maximize itemized benefits—without altering their overall philanthropic rhythm. This approach often unlocks additional tax leverage while preserving intent.
Stewardship in Action
We don’t just advise on generosity—we live it. As a firm, we commit 10% of our profits annually to charitable causes and are actively building WealthGive, our own 501(c)(3) foundation. This platform will soon give SCP clients the opportunity to direct their donor advised fund contributions within a trusted, mission-aligned ecosystem—deepening their impact with clarity and confidence.
We believe good planning magnifies generosity. It’s not about giving more or less—it’s about giving more efficiently and extending the impact of your giving.
